YNA-720 Series overview

The YNA-720 Series is a vector network analyzer platform for semiconductor chip, material, antenna, high-speed cable and microwave component testing. Its three models, the YNA-720-26G5, YNA-720-44G and YNA-720-67G, differ in frequency range and port connector: frequency range is 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz / 10 MHz to 44 GHz / 10 MHz to 67 GHz by model, and the port connectors are 3.5 mm, 2.4 mm and 1.85 mm respectively, each with a 50 Ω system impedance.

Flexible hardware configuration and measurement software combine several measurement tasks through one connection. The platform provides 21 measurement functions, among them pulse S-parameter, frequency-conversion, gain-compression, spectrum, signal-integrity, differential I/Q and total harmonic distortion measurements, and the available functions depend on the configured hardware and measurement options. IF bandwidth is selectable from 1 Hz to 30 MHz, and a sweep holds 200,001 measurement points.

A 15.6-inch multitouch display presents multiple parameters on one screen, and SCPI instruction synchronization recording generates a script with one key. The detachable CPU module carries the hard disk and the LAN, DP, USB and GPIB interfaces. The rear panel adds a 10 MHz reference input and output, pulse and trigger inputs and outputs, a bias-tee configuration input and an automatic test interface for integration into a test rack.

YNA-720 Series capabilities and applications

Detailed features and capabilities

Measurements and calibration

The YNA-720 Series measures S-parameters, differential (balanced) parameters and receiver quantities, and runs limit, ripple and filter bandwidth tests. Display formats include logarithmic magnitude, phase, group delay, Smith chart, linear magnitude, VSWR, real part, imaginary part, polar coordinates and impedance.

Pulse S-parameter measurement

A built-in 4-channel pulse generator handles internal source modulation, IF gate control and output from the rear panel. Automatic broadband synchronous measurement, narrow-band asynchronous measurement and an adaptive narrow-band filter support narrow-pulse tests, and three trigger input and output modules coordinate the analyzer with other instruments.

Frequency-converter and active-device measurement

Noise figure measurement is option -003, listed for YNA-720-26G5 to YNA-720-67G.

Mixer and converter scalar measurement supports linear, power and segment sweeps, power-meter calibration across the RF and IF bands, and dual independent source power and receiver calibration for non-insertable devices. Vector measurement adds amplitude response, absolute phase and absolute delay in a single connection. Noise figure measurement uses the cold-source method and patented noise embedding and de-embedding for devices with non-standard interfaces, and reports the minimum noise figure, the noise internal resistance and the optimal reflection coefficient. FFT-based spectrum analysis on each port locates spurious signals and harmonics, with in-band power, power spectral density, occupied bandwidth and adjacent power ratio markers.

Signal integrity, harmonic distortion and fixture removal

Signal-integrity analysis provides micron-level spatial resolution for small chip packages and tests near-end and far-end crosstalk between transmission lines. Simulated eye diagrams accept jitter, noise, pre-emphasis and equalization. Total harmonic distortion measurement under true differential excitation corrects ratio, absolute receiver and port excitation power errors with a single calibration. Automatic fixture removal needs no custom calibration, removes near-end and far-end crosstalk of differential fixtures and supports fixtures with one end open.

YNA-720 Series applications

  • Semiconductor and chip testing

Automatic fixture removal extracts and de-embeds fixture parameters for packaged and in-chip microwave devices that cannot connect directly to the analyzer.

  • Material measurements

  • Radar T/R components and antenna transceiver modules

Swept pulse S-parameter, pulse envelope and pulse point tests run with internal or external pulse synchronization.

  • High-speed cables and interconnects

One view combines time-domain and frequency-domain analysis to locate impedance discontinuities, reflections and near-end or far-end crosstalk, and simulated eye diagrams run pass/fail templates.

  • Microwave components and filters

Limit, ripple and filter bandwidth tests run on the analyzer, with display formats from log magnitude and group delay to Smith chart.

  • Mixers, converters and differential active devices

Scalar conversion loss, vector amplitude, absolute phase and absolute delay cover mixers and converters; differential I/Q and THD functions cover differential amplifiers and I/Q mixers.

Choose the YNA-720 Series model by the highest frequency of the device under test, which also sets the port connector size. The per-model tables give maximum output power and system dynamic range twice: for the standard configuration, and for a configuration with measurement options such as the programmable step attenuator and configurable test set, where the printed output power and dynamic range are lower.

What to include in a quote request (5)

For a YNA-720 Series quotation, state the points below so the right model and option set can be checked.

  • The highest DUT frequency, which selects the YNA-720-26G5, YNA-720-44G or YNA-720-67G and with it the port connector size.
  • Whether you need four-port measurement (option -400, listed for YNA-720-26G5 to YNA-720-67G), which adds 2 ports and makes the unit deeper.
  • The measurement functions you need, such as pulse, mixer and converter, gain compression, spectrum, signal integrity or differential I/Q, because available functions depend on the configured hardware and measurement options.
  • The calibration kit or electronic calibration module you will use, because the datasheet lists no standard delivery contents or calibration standards.
  • Any USB accessories by part number, such as the GPM40-U power sensor or XNF40-U noise source, and the connector gender you need on the YNA-720-44G or YNA-720-67G.
